BECKTON

Beckton is an up and coming urban neighbourhood in east London, forming part of the London Borough of Newham. Between 1981 and 1995 the area received a boost when the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) was constructed under the London Docklands Development Corporation, and new homes were built to address its expanding population.

In recent years, Beckton has been revitalised as part of the Docklands project. It is served by the DLR, and within easy reach of London City Airport, an international airport, to ensure hassle-free flying in and out of the city for work or leisure.

Beckton is also in close range of the University of East London, a public university in the Borough of Newham, based at three campuses in Stratford and Docklands, as well as Kingsford Community School.

Whilst Beckton is home to various types of residential properties and shopping centres, small pockets of Victorian housing still survive, adding to the unique charm of the area. New Beckton Park provides opportunity for long, leisurely strolls, whilst the huge Newham City Farm allows visitors of all ages the chance to reconnect with nature and interact with farm and other animals.

As with the rest of the areas we concentrate on, Beckton is not behind when it comes to regeneration. A planning framework for the Royal Docks and Beckton Riverside focuses on releasing surplus industrial land and intensifying other sites, which City Hall believes will open up further developable land on the north banks – potentially leading to the delivery of 24,000 homes and 60,000 new jobs. The plans also explore the need for new and improved transport infrastructure to serve key development sites and improve the capacity of the existing network, including proposing new routes, a river walk and a network of open spaces.
